Streaks rarely occur “because glass is difficult”; they almost always result from dosing, choice of cloth, water hardness, or the wrong sequence. This guide shows mild mixtures for mirrors and glass, safe application, common mistakes — and when you should avoid a DIY recipe.

A mild mixture for mirrors and glass can work very well – but only if recipe, materials and technique match. Streaks almost never occur by chance: they are often residues (too much cleaner, too much dish soap, fabric softener residues in the cloth), unfavorable water (hard tap water with limescale) or simply the wrong sequence (wiping first, then “polishing” with a dry cloth while dirt is still on the surface).

1) Too much surfactant: dish soap is helpful – but only in traces

Dish soap contains surfactants (surface-active agents) that dissolve grease and dirt. Surfactants are basically useful on glass, but when overdosed they leave a film. This film spreads when you re-wipe – and appears as streaks, especially in backlight.

Typical pattern: the surface looks “clean” immediately after wiping, but as soon as light hits it at an angle you see matte arcs or streaks. That often indicates too much dish soap or a too concentrated mixture.

2) Hard water: limescale forms a fine veil

In regions with high water hardness more mineral residue remains when drying (e.g. calcium/magnesium). On glass this appears as a fine gray film. The less you buff afterwards and the more water remains on the surface, the more likely you are to see it.

For mild mixtures that means: work with little liquid and – if necessary – mix in part with distilled water instead of constantly making the recipe “stronger.”

3) The cloth is “clean” – but not residue-free

Microfibre cloths pick up a lot of dirt. They can also carry residues: fabric softener, fragrance oils, too much detergent or kitchen grease. That causes you to spread a film on the glass instead of cleaning it.

A quick test: rub a clean drinking glass dry with the cloth. If it looks milky or smears, the cloth is not suitable – even if it has just been washed.

4) Wrong sequence: first clean, then dry – not the other way around

You avoid streaks most reliably when you work in two stages: first dissolve and pick up (slightly damp), then remove remaining moisture (dry). If you “polish” dry directly, you push dirt particles and cleaner residues back and forth.

Mild mixture for mirrors and glass: three proven recipes

The following mixtures are deliberately simple and low-dosed. They are intended for normal soiling: fingerprints, splashes, dust film, light toothpaste spots in the bathroom. For heavy grease films or nicotine deposits you often need a different approach (and more mechanical pre-cleaning), otherwise it quickly becomes greasy.

Recipe A (Standard): Distilled water + tiny amount of dish soap

  • 500 ml distilled water (or very soft tap water)
  • 1–2 drops clear dish soap (really just drops, not a „splash“)

Suitable for: mirrors, glass surfaces, glass tables, display cabinets, shower glass with a light film (not for heavy limescale). Very good „everyday“ mixture because it is mild and rarely attacks materials.

Why it works: The minimal amount of surfactant removes finger oils without leaving a strong film. Distilled water reduces limescale residues.

When unsuitable: When the surface needs heavy degreasing (e.g., kitchen windows above the stove) or when hard limescale deposits are already present.

Recipe B (fast-drying): water + some alcohol (isopropanol or ethanol)

  • 450 ml water (with hard water, partially distilled is recommended)
  • 50 ml isopropanol (2-propanol) or ethanol

Suitable for: bathroom mirrors, glass surfaces that should dry streak-free quickly. Alcohol evaporates faster and can dissolve grease films better than water alone.

Safety: Alcohol is flammable. Do not use near open flames, ensure good ventilation, and store out of reach of children. Do not spray onto hot surfaces.

Material note: For painted, delicate or freshly painted frames, test first on an inconspicuous area. Some plastics (e.g., certain acrylic variants or coated films) may react sensitively.

Recipe C (for light water spots): water + very mild vinegar content

  • 450 ml water
  • 50 ml household vinegar (5%) or milder: 1–2 tablespoons vinegar per 500 ml

Suitable for: light limescale marks on glass (e.g., water splashes at the mirror edge). Acetic acid dissolves mineral deposits better than a plain soap solution.

Important: Do not use vinegar „automatically“ for everything. Acids are not suitable for every environment: natural stone (e.g., marble) nearby, sensitive grout or certain metal surfaces can be damaged. If you cannot reliably control cleaning cloths and spray mist in the bathroom, Recipe A or B is often the safer choice.

Application decides: how to proceed for streak-free results

With the right technique you get more out of any mild mixture—and you don’t have to keep adjusting the dosage. The most important point: control the amount of liquid. Surfaces that are too wet dry unevenly, and that is exactly when the classic streaks appear.

Step 1: Remove loose dust dry (if necessary)

If visible dust is on the glass, wipe it off dry first (e.g., with a clean, dry microfiber cloth). Otherwise dust + cleaner quickly becomes a smear-like paste that you only spread around.

Step 2: Apply cleaner to the cloth, not to the surface (especially for mirrors)

For mirrors this is a big difference: if you spray directly onto the mirror, liquid tends to run into edges or under frames. There it can dissolve residues that later migrate back onto the surface, or it attacks adhesive/backing. Instead spray lightly onto the cloth, not dripping wet.

Step 3: Wipe in strokes, not circles

Circular motions look ‚thorough‘, but often produce an uneven appearance. Better: even strokes, slightly overlapping. For large surfaces the S-shape (squeegee technique without a squeegee) works well; for mirrors often vertical/horizontal.

Step 4: Buff with a dry second cloth

Use a second, dry cloth (ideally a glass cloth or a fine microfiber cloth that has not been exposed to fabric softener). Now remove the remaining moisture and minimize drying marks. If you only have one cloth, consistently turn it to a dry side.

Step 5: Inspect in raking light

Inspect mirrors/glass from a low angle. If streaks are visible, the surface is usually still slightly wet or there is too much surfactant involved. Then don’t go over it wet again; rather work it dry. If it gets worse: change the cloth.

Which cloths really help: microfiber cloth, glass cloth, paper?

For streak-free glass the choice of material is almost as important as the solution. Here is a practical overview, without product claims.

Microfiber cloths: very effective, but maintenance-dependent

Microfiber (very fine synthetic fibers) absorbs dirt and grease well. It works particularly well with mild solutions because the fiber provides mechanical support. But: residues in the cloth are a common cause of streaks.

  • Wash microfiber cloths preferably without fabric softener (fabric softener leaves a film on the fibers).
  • Use a low-dose detergent and rinse thoroughly.
  • If cloths become ‚musty‘ or greasy, clean them separately instead of continuing to carry them along.

Glass cloths (finely woven): good for final polishing

Many glass cloths are woven to shed very little lint and to pull dry effectively. They are especially suitable as the second cloth after the wet wiping pass.

Kitchen paper/newspaper: sometimes works, but is not reliable

Some use paper because it appears ‚dry‘ quickly. In practice the result depends heavily on paper quality, printing ink and tear resistance. For delicate surfaces and mirror frames a good cloth is usually the safer option.

Special cases: bathroom mirrors, shower glass, windows, car windows

‚Glass is glass‘ is only partially true in households. Depending on the environment other residues appear: soap residues in the bathroom, grease in the kitchen, road film on cars. A mild solution can still be suitable – but the procedure should be adapted.

Bathroom mirrors: often it’s toothpaste and hairspray, not ‚dirt‘

Toothpaste contains fine abrasives (very small particles), hairspray forms a sticky film. With both: first loosen, then pick up. Recipe A or B works well, but don’t wipe too wet and ensure nothing runs into the mirror edge.

Shower glass: streaks often come from soap + limescale

When shower glass appears greasy, it is often a mixture of soap residues (organic/greasy) and limescale (mineral). A plain vinegar solution removes limescale, but not necessarily the grease film. Conversely, dish soap removes grease but not limescale. In practice, a two-stage approach often helps: first mildly degrease (Recipe A), then locally remove limescale (Recipe C), wiping well after each step and not “mixing everything at once”.

Windows: include frames and seals in the process

Windows often streak because when wiping, dirty water runs from the frame back onto the pane. Therefore, if necessary, clean the frame first (mild, little water), dry it, and only then the pane. For large areas a squeegee is helpful, but here too: don’t use too much cleaner, otherwise you will get residue marks.

Interior car windows: caution with off-gassing and sensitive surfaces

Inside, streaks on windows often result from plastic off-gassing (dashboard) and finger grease. A mild alcohol mixture (Recipe B) can be useful, but spray sparingly and avoid contact with sensitive displays, soft-touch plastics or leather. Always test on the cloth first.

What you should avoid: common mistakes and risky combinations

Many problems arise from well-intentioned “upgrades.” Below are the most common points that in practice lead to streaks, odor or material damage.

Too much vinegar or “high acidity” in the bathroom

Strong acid is rarely necessary in a household. It can damage seals, certain metals or surrounding surfaces — and the spray mist often lands where you do not want it. If you need to remove limescale, work selectively (cloth, spot treatment, briefly) rather than spraying everything broadly.

Baking soda/washing soda on glass as a “glass cleaner”

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and washing soda (sodium carbonate) are alkaline and can clean, but are often unsuitable for streak-free glass because they can leave residues. In addition, as powders they are mechanically abrasive — if used incorrectly you risk micro-scratches, especially on sensitive surfaces or coatings.

Fragrance oils and “extra shine” additives

Oily additives are almost always counterproductive for glass: they increase the risk of streaking and can leave a film on mirrors and windows that attracts dust. For glass the rule is usually: the simpler, the better.

Mixing cleaners “until it works”

If you combine different cleaners (e.g. acidic descalers + chlorine-containing products + alcohol), that can be dangerous or attack materials. Stick to a clear recipe and a clear task. Practical check: how to find the right dosage for your situation

You do not have to experiment every time. With a small, controlled approach you will quickly obtain a stable result.

If it smears: first reduce dosage, then change cloth

  • Reduce the dish soap recipe to 1 drop per 500 ml.
  • Use a second, dry cloth for final polishing.
  • If it persists: change the cloth (residues are a very common cause).

If it appears limescale-like: improve water quality instead of more cleaner

  • Use proportionally distilled water.
  • Work less wet and dry more quickly afterwards.
  • For visible limescale spots: apply a mildly vinegar-containing solution (Recipe C) locally and then rinse with water.

If there are still streaks: check the surroundings

Direct sunlight or very warm panes cause cleaners to dry too quickly — leaving streaks. A heavily heated bathroom after showering (a lot of steam) also makes streak-free drying more difficult. Better: ventilate briefly, then clean.

Storage and safety: small rules to avoid problems

DIY mixtures seem harmless but should still be handled carefully — especially if alcohol is involved or if children live in the household.

  • Label every spray bottle (contents, date). Even if the photo shows no label: in a real household this helps enormously.
  • Store mixtures out of reach of children.
  • For alcohol mixtures: do not store them next to heat sources or near open flames.
  • Use preferably clean bottles. Old cleaner residues can alter effectiveness or cause odors.

And: if you have sensitive surfaces nearby (natural stone, painted wooden frames, special films), always test new mixtures first in an inconspicuous spot. It’s tedious, but it prevents damage.

When a DIY recipe makes sense — and when a ready-made glass cleaner is the safer choice

A mild mixture is appropriate if you:

  • have ordinary everyday soiling,
  • want as few residues as possible,
  • prefer a controllable, simple formula.

A ready-made glass cleaner (or a specialty cleaner) can be more appropriate if:

  • you face highly variable, difficult soiling (e.g. grease + smoke + dust),
  • you need to clean very large areas quickly and require consistent results,
  • you repeatedly encounter the same streaking point with DIY mixtures (often because cloths/water/environment are hard to control).

This is not an „either-or“: many households do well with a mild standard recipe (option A or B) and only supplement selectively when needed (e.g. for limescale). The decisive factor is not to overload the mixture.

Conclusion: streak-free is usually a matter of control, not strength

A mild mixture for mirrors and glass will be streak-free if used sparingly, you work with a clean cloth and the surface does not get too wet. For most mirrors and glass surfaces, distilled water with one to two drops of dish detergent is sufficient — or a light alcohol mixture for faster drying. Vinegar can help with limescale but should be used purposefully and with care.
